A walk
A camera app on my phone is giving me hope these days in the battle against doomscrolling. I use it most when I’m walking. In a way, it incentivizes being present and taking in my surroundings. The app is called Dazz Cam and it limits the iPhone‘s camera features to simulate a variety of film cameras. You don’t realize how much background processing is happening to get a balanced exposure until those settings are overridden. I know I’m not actually wasting a roll of film, yet I’m somehow more aware and conscientious about whether I’m getting a good shot. I’m thinking about light and composition. For whatever reason, the regular camera app doesn’t seem to captivate me in the same way. Maybe I’m just not interested in post-edits. I’ll continue to think about why this is working out and enjoy the renewed interest in photography. It’s at least one step in the right direction.
